As the old saying goes: if you love something, let it go.
When you started your project, it was probably something that you were super excited about. Maybe it was yarn that you wouldn’t wait to use, or a beautiful pattern that you had been aching to try. If it turns out to be not as fun or satisfying of a project as you thought it would be, it might be time that you go separate ways. Here are 4 signs that you need to let your WIP go.
1. Out of sight, out of mind
You don’t have to work on your project if you can’t find it. If your project is hidden at the back of closet, or the bottom of a bin somewhere, then chances are it is not something that you pick up very often. Sometimes you might really have lost track of one of your project. More often than not, it is just something that you don’t want to work on anymore. If this is the case, you might be better off just frogging it and using the yarn for something else.
2. Sparking Joy
Each time you see your project, or take it out to work on it, you feel disappointed or sad. If every time you look at your project, you feel negative emotions, then it is not bringing you joy anymore. You might be so determined to see something through, that you forget that this is something that is supposed to bring you happiness. In the spirit of Marie Kondo, if it doesn’t spark joy, thank it for being part of your life and frog it!
3. Project Left Behind
Always starting new projects, but not finishing this one? This is another sign that maybe it is time to give up on a lost cause. You might just be avoiding the problem by always starting something new to distract yourself from the project you don’t want to finish. You might be stubborn and feel that you need to finish it, but sometimes it just isn’t worth it. If it has been over a year since you have made significant progress, then it might be time to let your WIP go. It shouldn’t be something you have to feel guilty about.
4. Yarn Daydreaming
If you are already thinking about other projects that you can make with with the yarn that you are using for this project, then give that yarn a new life! It is much better being used on something that you are dreaming of than being tied up in a project that you might be starting to resent. This is a sure sign that it is time to let this project go, and start a new one that you are more passionate about.
No matter how much you want to complete a project, sometimes things just don’t work out. Try not to beat yourself up about it. Yarn crafting is a fun activity and should bring you joy. So if it doesn’t, don’t be afraid to let your WIP go and move on to something new.
