In Knit&Note, you can find knitting patterns by many talented designers, and we want you to get to know them even better! Every month, we will interview one of our designers, get to know them a little better, and maybe learn a few things we didn’t already know. The designer of the month in November is Ekaterina, better known as Moreca Knit.
Who are you?
My name is Ekaterina, or just Kate, and I am a knitwear designer.
Tell us a bit about your knitting journey
I started knitting about eight years ago, simply out of curiosity – I wanted to learn a new skill. Before that I was sewing, so moving into knitting felt quite natural. My first projects were far from perfect – hats, then sweaters – but the process itself completely drew me in.
What made you start designing?
Since I learned to knit on my own, at some point I wanted to create a sweater from scratch. I started drafting patterns, and my sewing background helped me a lot – I already understood how shape and fit are built in garments. Curiosity and a desire to experiment pushed me to bring construction principles from sewing into knitting. Of course, there were many technical challenges, but they are exactly what made me search for solutions, combine techniques, and keep learning.
What inspires your design process?
My inspiration changes from project to project. Sometimes it is a color, sometimes the texture of the yarn, and sometimes the shape of the garment itself. I do not have one constant source of inspiration – what I do have is a constant interest in challenges. The more complex the idea, the more excited and engaged I feel. I love details – they usually take up about 80% of my attention.
What do you do when you’re not knitting?
When I am not knitting? I am not sure that has really happened yet – haha. But if I imagine that such moments exist,I spend time with my family and friends, go for walks, travel, listen to audiobooks, and enjoy learning new things.
What can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?
I really want to knit a lopapeysa – and I think that is exactly what you can expect from me in the near future.
